Bow Hunters Getting Ready For The Rut
by Rick Henninger
The leaves are showing off their vibrant fall colors as they begin to fall. The nights are dropping into the thirties and on most mornings you can see your breath. This is the beginning of big buck season. From now until mid to late November is the greatest opportunity of harvesting a huge Ohio whitetail.
During the pre-rut, the bucks will be on the move, not necessarily seeking does but rubbing, scraping and setting up boundaries. They move alot, even during daylight hours. Most successful archers try to spend as much time hunting as they can.
Pre-rut is probably the best time to see a lot of bucks. Full rut is often perceived to be tops, but not always. Once the big boys get with the does they stay with them. If the does move, they move. Once they find and start breeding receptive females you have to catch one on the move following, moving with them.
Pre-rut very often brings about all kinds of deer movement . Younger bucks get really frisky and can be spotted moving from place to place., Sometimes two or there times during one hunting session. Big bucks are more discreet. They know where the does bed and feed and do not waste as much time or energy seeking them out.
Midday hunts are good during pre-rut activity. The big boys like to move when other deer are less active. Dominate bucks are loners but will respond to rattling, doe bleets and little grunts on a call.
Now is the time to be in the woods, it is fairly comfortable and a most beautiful time. And who knows you just might have a crack at that trophy of a lifetime.
Get the youngsters out..
They will enjoy seeing wildlife along with the deer. Most bow companies are making junior models to fit , both in compound and crossbow. For more information call 330-544-8951.
